Jury Member, South Asia Book Award
South Asia National Outreach Consortium

The art of writing is inextricably connected to the depth and breadth of one’s reading. Though I enjoy a variety of literature, much of the writing that has left the deepest impression on me has been children’s and young adult fiction. As a jury member on the South Asia Book Award committee, I have the opportunity to delve into many a tale targeted at younger audiences, and to help provide librarians and teachers with recommendations for educational use. Encouraging diversity in literature, while maintaining cultural authenticity in stories are standards I value and I believe these viewpoints flow into my own writing.

On the Stage

More often than not, penning a piece is not enough. You also need to be able to “perform” it in order to further explain it, to discuss it, to communicate it to different audiences. At a very young age, my love of theatre taught me to value the art of performance. In 3rd grade, long before I even knew what a producer was, I got a prize for outstanding production of a play. Over the years I have “performed” on a variety of stages—in theatre, as a teacher, while presenting my work at conferences, and during various instances of public speaking.  These have been some of the most challenging, yet highly fulfilling experiences of my professional life.

Room to Read

My time at the international literacy non-profit taught me how on the ground situations are shaped into stories that can effectively be communicated and marketed to a target audience, and how data driven results need to be broken down and conveyed in easy to understand language.  I enjoyed communicating with a global social media audience of over six hundred thousand (600K+) and working on press outreach strategy involving both local and international press, while working on internal and external representation of Room to Read’s stories.

B.A. English Literature | 2009

I have lost count of the number of written works I have compared, annotated, and analyzed. From Austen and Dickens to Baldwin and Chopin, from 18th century Elizabethan drama to late medieval poetry, from Michael Ondaatje and Bapsi Sidhwa’s contemporary post-colonial literature to the 19th century novel—my training in English Literature is thorough and expansive. For me, Literature has provided a base for almost every other discipline I have worked in.
